bought this...

Now I’ve got an extra 5.3 just sitting in the shop. It happens to be a LM4 aluminum block 5.3 bone stock.

The new truck has a 2.8L 6 cylinder with a 4 speed. It’s slow VERY VERY slow. It has a carburetor that does weird magic I don’t really understand and has manual brakes.

So the answer is obvious put the 5.3 in the truck. (F body 12" disc brakes in the front as well)

My question to oppo is in regards to ECU’s. I’ve previously used the stock F body harness and ecu. It ran fine and was used as a daily driver in the datsun. The new project will be a typical big eBay turbo budget LS build with hopes to make 500 right out the gate and 700hp by the end of the year. Just curious if anyone has used Microsquirt or Megasquirt on a LS build or any other type of engine where you may be able to give some insight.

The s10 makes the perfect Grom hauler.

I’m going to be going with Megasquirt or similar for my build, but I plan to build the controller myself. Also, Microsquirt isn’t going to work for me because while I don’t need ignition control, only fuel, I want to be able to sequential-drive or at least batch fire eight injectors with the ability to vary current, and that’s beyond what the Microsquirt can do.

I’d have some pointers and information to work from, except I’m not to that phase of my project yet.

Would it be easier to just install a power brake booster instead of bolting on bigger brakes? I think if I stood on the brake pedal I could flip the Willys end-over-end the brakes are so good, and that’s with 1970s AMC/GM technology and a vacuum booster.

Absolutely. You could probably get used parts to do the swap for close to nothing.

What is your MS going on to ?

You’re saying to just throw a vacuum booster on the stock brakes ?

That worked on the willys ?

A Rover V8 using either the original injectors or slightly larger ones in two sets of Honda CBR 600RR bike throttle bodies. Eight throttle bodies, indirect injection, but with a Lucas electronic dizzy and ordinary plugs and coil for the look and to keep my different fail-to-starts separate.

The Rover V8 is going in a ‘63 Ranchero.

My mistake - a master cylinder and booster kit with proportioning valve would fix you up. They’re a few hundred dollars and are well worth it.

ETA: a brake setup from an S10 with power brakes would be the best option for you and probably the least expensive. A terrible photo of the Willys’ setup.

Jesus. I had a friend in high school who had an S10 with a mild 305 in it, and that could easily break traction. I have to imagine 500hp would be very difficult to control.

Aside from brakes, are you planning on upgrading the rubber and suspension? You'll need to if you want to avoid power sliding literally everywhere.

I thought for high power boosted builds, you wanted an iron block LS?

oh yea this is a drag focused build. So 28" slicks maybe even drag radials will defiantly hold traction especially at the track.

That works. Should be a lot of fun

I think your right when it comes to 1000hp or anything north of 7-750. I’ve got a handful of engines at the shop I just figure for the first season of drag racing I can run with the aluminum block and enjoy the 85-90 pound weight savings it brings along. I’m sure after a while I’ll get nicer components and eventually build a 408 iron block or go LSX.

High psi builds and LS1 will hold 15psi all day on stock stuff

but that’s 900 bucks... doesn’t have a data logger or the other benefits open source megasquirt does.

No Rust > Rust - Clean Paint > Bad Paint - it’s a truck and I daily a honda grom so it’s very practical for me to have a truck.
